On September 11, 2019, representatives from Muslim Americans for Compassion (MAC), a Louisville-based interfaith peace advocacy organization, delivered box lunches to fire stations and police stations throughout the city.

Delivery of the lunches coincides with the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. For MAC President Dr. Muhammad Babar and the other MAC representatives, the attacks mark not only a sad day for America, but a sad for Islam as well.

“Such brutal disregard for the sanctity of human life is not part of our faith,” said Babar, a first-generation Muslim-American from Pakistan. “The heart of Islam and the heart of America was torn that day. And since then our public discourse on issues of faith, patriotism, politics, and social justice has sadly grown more and more hostile. Providing lunches to a few people will not solve our divisive struggles, but even the smallest acts of compassion can make a big difference in our world.”

This year Muslim Americans for Compassion delivered lunches to:

  • Emergency Operations Center
  • LMPD 1st Division
  • LMPD 2nd Division
  • LMPD 4th Division
  • Louisville Fire Department Headquarters
  • Fire Department Engine Co 19

Special thanks to Sohail Zuberi, owner of the Subway restaurant in Holiday Manor Shopping Center, for providing the lunches!

According to Babar, the MAC lunch delivery is a gesture of thanks to our first responders’ commitment to service.

“In the face of danger, these are the women and men who risk their own lives to protect others,” said Babar. “Their commitment is not prioritized by a person’s race, creed or culture. Their commitment is rooted in compassion for all of humanity.”

Muslim Americans for Compassion is an organization built to engage the community through interfaith, environmental, and philanthropic outreach initiatives and to promote educational activities and events, whether hosted by MAC or another organization, focused on interfaith dialogue. MAC hopes to provide a platform by which Muslim Americans are able to engage their fellow citizens in such a way as to increase mutual understanding and respect through service and compassion for all.
